Columbia Slips Past BA

The Bridgton Football team ended its 2010 campaign with a loss at Columbia University. Many injuries prevented the wolverines from having a productive game on both sides of the ball. The final score being 30-14. Wide Receiver Stephen Sweeney (Mahwah, NJ) had the only two scores on the day and the extra points added in by Marcus Hackett (Montclair, NJ). Joe McCarthy (West Roxbury, MA) also had a productive day with significant catches and quality return yards during the game. Defensively, Connor Candito (Shrewsbury, MA) had a productive day consistently making plays and flying around the field.

The Wolverines will start to prepare themselves for the annual Black & Gray showcase on December 8th. Student-athletes will be hitting the books hard heading into the thanksgiving break as well becoming bigger stronger and faster in the off-season. The football wolverines ended the season 6-4.

Football Rolls Over Dartmouth J.V.

Bridgton Academy went to Hanover, NH to take on the Dartmouth College Big Green. The final score was 39-30 with Bridgton Academy grabbing the wild win securing a winning season for the 2010 football season.

The Bridgton running attack seemed to be no match for Dartmouth led by Hunter Beckmann (Shrewsbury, MA) who had 13 rushes for 102-yards and a touchdown. Jacob Grills (Niantic, CT) also led the pack with 14 rushes for 92-yards and two touchdowns. He also threw for 133-yards and his third touchdown of the day. Julian Griffin (New Rochelle, NY) had 32-yards rushing and a touchdown. Daryl Shuler (Peekskill, NY) added 47-yards rushing and a touchdown while Marcus Hackett (Montclair, NJ) had two catches for 82-yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Wolverines forced five turnovers including three fumbles recovered and two interceptions, one coming in the last two minutes of the game to secure the win. Defensive Back Charlie Bates (Reading, MA) came up huge in big situations, namely when he grabbed an interception to secure the win for the Wolverines. Parrish Rogers-Reed (Westfield, MA) had 19 total tackles for the day, 10 of which were solo. Connor Candito (Shrewsbury, MA) also tallied 12 tackles, a fumble recovery, and an interception.

With a short week of preparation, Bridgton will be looking to end their season on top when they face Columbia University on Friday, November 12th at 2pm.

BA Tumps Yale

The football team had a very long trip this weekend. They traveled to Yale University on Saturday to watch the matchup between the Yale Bulldogs and the Columbia Lions. The young men were able to watch and take advantage of seeing Division 1 players compete at such a level. The team was also lucky enough to receive a brief presentation from the University of New Haven coaching staff while eating a delicious breakfast on their campus the next morning.

After an eye opening and awe inspiring experience, the Wolverines took on the Bulldogs J.V. team. Bridgton Academy won 21-6 by using a strong running attack against the Handsome Dans. On offense Jacob Grills (Niantic, CT) had a great day with 14 rushes totaling 128-yards and a touchdown. Hunter Beckmann (Shrewsbury, MA) had 14 rushes as well totaling 88-yards and BA’s second touchdown. Julian Griffin (Hartsdale, NY) scored the Wolverines third touchdown of the game securing the win for the Wolverines. Jonathan Winbush (Worcester, MA) the “Wild Wolverine” touched the ball in three different positions for the day. He was a quarterback with two throws for 45-yards, a running back, and had multiple quality receptions as a receiver. Jesse Gould (North Hampton, NH) who is fresh off an injury had a great day with four receptions for 62-yards.

On defense, Derek Karr (Littleton, MA) made plays all over the field adding a few interceptions. A.J. Marsiglia (Berlin, CT) also had a standout performance and Sir-Tay Jackson (New Rochelle, NY) had a few forced fumbles as well as a fumble recovery.

This coming weekend the team will travel to Dartmouth College to play the Big Green's J.V. squad on Sunday at 12:00 P.M.
